Okay besties, so like, what even is happening with all these lawsuits? If it feels like the states are constantly dragging the Trump administration into court lately, that’s because they literally are.
As of this week, more than 20 states are actively suing the Trump administration over a variety of policies—from public health to gun control to literally just getting their grant money back. The legal vibes are… not cute.
Let’s spill the tea. Who’s Suing and Why?
Coalitions of state attorneys general (AGs) have filed at least 11 major lawsuits just this year, and honey, it’s only June. These aren’t one-off court filings either—these are coordinated multi-state efforts where 15 to 24 states (plus DC) team up to slap the federal government with some serious legal shade.
Here’s what’s on the legal runway:
- AmeriCorps Grant Cuts: 24 states + DC sued after Trump’s budget office tried to axe youth and education programs. Like, how dare they.
- Birthright Citizenship EO: 22 states joined forces to challenge a controversial executive order attempting to limit who is considered a U.S. citizen by birth. Yes, we’re still debating that.
- Wind Energy Slowdown: 17 states are suing because Trump’s people are delaying offshore wind projects. Um, climate change is real? Hello??
- Gun Trigger Devices: Just today, 15 states filed suit over Trump’s decision to return previously banned rapid-fire trigger devices. Like, are we even trying to reduce gun violence anymore?
And guess who just walked into court in heels? That’s right: California. The Golden State just said they are now suing the Trump administration again, this time over the president’s decision to deploy National Guard troops without proper state consultation.
And yeah, this isn’t their first rodeo. California has basically been in a permanent breakup with Trump in court since 2017.
Girl, if this were a trend report, it would be red-flag city. The Legal Trend: Not Looking Good!
Since January 2025 alone:
- At least 186 lawsuits have been filed against the Trump administration.
- Of those, 20+ are active state-level suits, with many involving entire coalitions of states.
- And let’s not forget—Trump has lost or been forced to revise key actions due to these suits, like the halt on AmeriCorps grant clawbacks, reversed healthcare funding cuts, and blocked enforcement of certain tariffs under the IEEPA.
Multiple legal scholars (aka the nerds who read the Constitution for fun) are warning that this many active suits signals an “ongoing constitutional crisis” between states and federal power.
“This level of resistance from state governments is unprecedented in the modern era. It suggests not only deep policy disagreements but also a widespread belief that the administration is acting beyond its legal authority.”
Yikes.
So What Happens Next? More court dates, more AG press conferences, and let’s be honest—probably more losses for Trump’s team. The courts have increasingly sided with the states, especially in cases involving executive overreach, environmental rollbacks, and funding clawbacks. Plus, several states are already prepping new suits over proposed changes to immigration raids, surveillance, and even SNAP benefits.
One senior state official, who asked to remain anonymous (but girl we know who you are), told us:
“It’s like we have to sue to get the federal government to follow its own laws. That’s not how it’s supposed to work.”
This Is Not Normal, twenty-plus state lawsuits. Eleven state coalitions. And more being drafted as we speak. Whether it’s blue states defending democracy or red states flexing federalism, it’s clear: America’s states are in open legal rebellion against Trump’s White House.
And like, we love a good courtroom drama, but not when it means kids lose their AmeriCorps placements or our climate goals get set on fire.
Stay tuned, babes. The lawsuits aren’t slowing down anytime soon.
XOXO,
