Recently, Christopher Cocker, chief executive of the Pacific Tourism Organization said, “Pacific Island leaders have declared climate change as the foremost threat to the livelihoods, security, and well-being of Pacific communities,” and “Without immediate and innovative action, the future of tourism in the region remains highly uncertain.”

This follows last month’s Pacific Island Forum Leaders Meeting in Tonga where the United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres highlighted the peril that Pacific Islands states face, calling for the world’s most polluting countries to cut their greenhouse gas emissions.

Yes still, we’ve all heard people say some totally cray-cray things about climate change, right? It’s like, it’s not real or it’s not important. Um, what? It’s time to clear up the confusion, because climate change is real, it’s happening now, and the facts are, like, way more serious than some of these wild myths floating around.

1. Misconception: Climate change is just, like, a natural thing, and humans aren’t responsible.

Answer: Oh my God, no! While Earth’s climate does, like, naturally change, the crazy-fast warming we’re seeing now is totally because of humans. Fact: The IPCC, which is basically like, the world’s top climate experts, says it’s “extremely likely” (like, 95-100% sure) that humans are the main reason the Earth’s getting hotter since the 1950s. Burning fossil fuels and chopping down forests? So not helping.

2. Misconception: If it’s, like, cold or snowing, global warming isn’t real.

Answer: Ugh, no! Global warming is all about the big picture, not just what’s happening outside your window today. Fact: Even though you might get a chilly day or a snowstorm, the 2010s were, like, the hottest decade ever. 2016 was, like, the warmest year since forever, and even cold weather can get more extreme because, like, the climate’s all messed up.

3. Misconception: Carbon dioxide (CO2) is only, like, a tiny part of the atmosphere, so it can’t be that bad.

Answer: Just because it’s tiny doesn’t mean it’s not, like, super powerful! Fact: CO2 might only be a small part of the air, but it’s a total troublemaker. Like, CO2 levels have gone from 280 ppm (parts per million, obvi) before we started burning all this stuff to over 420 ppm now, which is, like, the highest it’s been in 800,000 years. Yikes!

4. Misconception: The climate’s always changed, so, like, what’s the big deal now?

Answer: Okay, but this time it’s, like, totally different. Fact: Sure, the climate’s changed before, but it used to happen over, like, thousands or millions of years. Now, it’s happening, like, super fast—like, in just decades! The Earth’s already warmed up by about 1.2°C (that’s like 2.2°F) since the late 1800s, and most of that’s happened since the ‘70s. So yeah, it’s a big deal.

5. Misconception: Scientists, like, totally disagree on whether climate change is real.

Answer: Um, no. Like, almost all scientists are on the same page here. Fact: Seriously, 97% of climate scientists agree that climate change is happening and that humans are, like, the main reason. And, like, the IPCC, which is made up of thousands of scientists, says the same thing. So yeah, the science is settled.

6. Misconception: Climate change isn’t a big deal because, like, technology will totally fix it.

Answer: Just sitting around waiting for some magic tech to save us? Yeah, no. Fact: We need to act now because, like, the longer we wait, the worse it gets. The IPCC says we need to cut global CO2 emissions by, like, 45% by 2030 (that’s, like, less than six years away!) and hit net zero by 2050 if we wanna avoid, like, super bad stuff. So yeah, we can’t just chill and wait for tech to save the day.

7. Misconception: Climate change is just, like, global warming.

Answer: OMG, it’s so much more than just warming! Fact: Climate change means, like, rising temperatures, but also, like, rising sea levels, more extreme weather (like, hello, hurricanes and heatwaves), and, like, changes in where it rains and stuff. The 2020 Atlantic hurricane season had, like, 30 named storms, which was totally the most ever. So yeah, it’s a whole vibe.

8. Misconception: Individual actions don’t really, like, make a difference.

Answer: Um, yes they do! Like, every little bit helps. Fact: When you, like, cut back on energy, drive less, or even, like, eat less meat, you’re totally reducing your carbon footprint. Going car-free for a year can save, like, 2.4 tons of CO2. If more people did that, it would be, like, a huge deal. Plus, it helps push for, like, bigger changes too!

9. Misconception: Renewable energy isn’t, like, reliable or big enough to matter.

Answer: Are you kidding? Renewables are, like, totally the future! Fact: In 2022, renewables made up nearly 30% of global electricity, and they’re only getting bigger. Solar and wind power costs have dropped, like, 90% and 70% in the last decade, making them super cheap and totally reliable. So yeah, they’re, like, a major player now.

10. Misconception: The effects of climate change are, like, way in the future.

Answer: Uh, no. It’s happening, like, right now. Fact: Rising sea levels? Already displacing communities. Extreme weather? It’s, like, more frequent and intense. The number of heatwaves has, like, tripled in some places since the 1960s, and tropical storms are, like, getting stronger because the oceans are warmer. So yeah, the future is now, babes.

So, like, there you have it! These are the real facts, so you can totally set the record straight when someone gets all confused about climate change.
