So, like, April 28, 2025? Major drama in Spain and Portugal, babes. The electricity just, like, peaced out across the whole area, and everyone was totally freaking out. It even hit a little bit of southern France and, like, even tiny Andorra. It’s honestly one of the biggest blackouts Europe has seen in, like, forever. Sooo not chic.
Okay, so according to REN — that’s like, Portugal’s grid boss — the whole thing started because of this super weird weather thing happening in central Spain. Think, like, crazy temperature swings causing the big power lines to, like, freak out and do this thing called “induced atmospheric vibration.” (I know, science, right?)
Anyway, the power grids just, like, couldn’t deal, and the whole system was basically, like, “nope, we’re done.”
At first, people were like, “Omg hackers??” but both Portuguese Prime Minister Luís Montenegro and Spain’s Pedro Sánchez were like, “Chill, it’s not that.” So, yeah, no cyber drama… just a natural vibe gone totally rogue.
Total Chaos, You Guys!
Major cities were, like, a hot mess.
In Lisbon? No metro, no traffic lights, and your phone was basically a glorified paperweight. Hospitals had to, like, run on emergency backup generators.
And Spain? Girl, Madrid and Barcelona were NOT having it. Trains and buses just, like, stopped. Airports were in survival mode. Even the nuclear plants were like, “we’re out” for safety reasons.
Madrid even, like, activated their emergency plan. So extra.
Even shopping was tragic. IKEA in Spain had to switch to backup generators — like, imagine trying to buy a bookshelf in the dark. Total horror story.
And in Portugal? IKEA was like, “bye,” and closed all their stores for the day.
Okay, so the good news? They’re, like, fixing it.
Spanish officials are saying it’ll take, like, 6 to 10 hours for most places to get their glow back. Portugal’s being a little more, like, chill out, and warning it might be a few days before everything is totally fabulous again.
Northern Spain already has some lights back, so, like, yay! But emergency services are still on high alert just in case things get messy again.
So basically, lesson of the day? Mother Nature can totally mess up your whole aesthetic when she feels like it. Stay fab, stay prepared, and maybe, like, invest in a cute flashlight, k?
XOXO,
