So, like, Marine Le Pen, the super famous far-right French politician, is totally in hot water right now because she’s on trial for allegedly, like, misusing European Union (EU) funds. And honestly? It’s a major scandal. This trial started on September 30, 2024, and everyone’s freaking out because if she’s found guilty, her whole career could go poof. I mean, can you imagine?
What’s the Tea?
OK, so basically, Le Pen and a bunch of her party peeps from the National Rally (RN) are accused of using EU money that was supposed to pay for, like, official assistants for Members of the European Parliament (MEPs). But instead, it’s alleged that they used the money for party stuff and even personal things. Cringe, right?
Apparently, from 2004 to 2017, Marine and her crew may have funneled over €600,000 into, like, totally sketchy uses. And let me tell you, the EU’s anti-fraud office, OLAF, is not amused. They’re accusing her of “embezzlement of public funds” and “complicity in the misuse of public money.” Oh, and the kicker? If she’s convicted, she could get up to 10 years in prison. Uh, yikes!
Also, her dad, Jean-Marie Le Pen (who, BTW, founded the party), is mixed up in this, too, along with a bunch of her ex-aides and party leaders. Can you say family drama?
So, Like, What Exactly Did They Do?
OK, so here’s how the fraud allegedly went down: Le Pen’s party peeps were supposedly listed as assistants to EU members when in reality, they were doing other stuff, like, working for the party back in France. But that’s totally not what the EU funds are supposed to be used for. It’s basically like telling your boss you’re working on a project but instead going shopping. LOL, except instead of shopping, they were running a political party.
Investigators say that some of these “assistants” were actually, like, political advisers or even bodyguards. And guess what? There were 20 of these so-called “fake jobs.” They weren’t doing EU work at all!
Marine Le Pen’s Like, “Not Guilty!”
Le Pen is, like, so over these accusations. She’s been super vocal about how this whole trial is just a ploy to, like, destroy her politically. In an interview with The Guardian, she was all like, “I have nothing to fear from this trial because I know that I did not misuse any funds.” OK, girl, spill that tea! She’s convinced this is all a setup by people who can’t handle her anti-EU, nationalist vibe.
Her legal team is, like, “Um, actually, this is all a misunderstanding.” They’re claiming the whole thing is based on confusion over what parliamentary assistants are allowed to do, and that it’s all, like, totally legit.
