Okay, so like, on April 30th, 2025, the U.S. and Ukraine finally signed this suuuper major deal in D.C. — and honestly? It’s giving big international energy. Basically, they created this thing called the Reconstruction Investment Fund (very official-sounding, I know), where the U.S. is gonna help rebuild Ukraine and also get access to like, a ton of rare minerals. We’re talking lithium, titanium, uranium — all the glam elements.
So here’s the tea: Ukraine’s gonna toss 50% of the money it makes from state-owned mineral resources into this fund, and the U.S. is gonna match it with cash, military goodies, and investment support. BUT — and this is like, super important — Ukraine still owns all the minerals and gets to say what happens with them. And the fund? All that money has to go toward rebuilding Ukraine for at least ten years. No funny business. No debt. Just, like, investments and infrastructure.
Oh, and President Trump — yes, that Trump — totally approved a $50 million military aid package right after the deal. Some people think it was like, a “thanks for the minerals” moment, but nothing’s been confirmed. Vibes? Very transactional.
But like, is this deal fair-fair? Or just “ugh fine” fair?
So, people are kinda split. On one side, it’s like, wow — no debt, full control, tons of money for rebuilding, and support from America. Total glow-up vibes. But on the other hand, some experts are like, “Hold up, why is HALF of Ukraine’s mineral revenue going into a fund the U.S. also manages?” Like, is that a little sus?
Dr. Anton Shevchenko — he’s like, this brainy economist in Kyiv — said, “It’s not exploitative, but like, the U.S. totally benefits more.” Which, duh. America doesn’t do charity unless it’s wearing a business suit.
But then Orysia Lutsevych from Chatham House was like, “Chill, this is actually a smart move. Ukraine’s not selling out, it’s investing in itself with a super rich partner.” So like, okay queen, love the optimism.
Anyway, if this actually works and Ukraine gets shiny new roads and cute new power plants out of it, then like… maybe it was worth it? But if not? Ugh, major eye roll.
XOXO,
